Dracula circe is an epiphytic orchid in the genus Dracula.

Description[]

Plant blooms in the summer with a few successive 5 cm wide flowers.

Distribution[]

This plant has not been recorded in the wild and both genetic and circumstantial evidence suggest it is a greenhouse hybrid. It was originally found in the Robledo collection outside of Medellin, Colombia, where spontaneous cross-species seed pods are common and lead to successful germinations. After it became apparent that unusual taxa found growing in open air South American nurseries were frequently the handiwork of philandering insect pollinators, more discretion was applied in the naming of new species.

Culture[]

Keep plant in partial shade. Plant can be grown in cold to cool conditions. Pot the plant in fine bark with perlite or sphagnum moss. Water regularly and keep potting media moist.

Naming[]

Etymology: Named for Circe, the island goddess who used sorcery to change her enemies into animals.

Common Names: Circe's Dracula
